Dancin Lukey’s Summerslam 2002 Hit and Miss List
Well Monday was a memorable day as the WWE presented Summerslam 2002, It’s supposed to be the second biggest WWE PPV of the year behind only Wrestlemania, However this year Summerslam, in my humble opinion, far surpassed the granddaddy of them all and delivered a much unexpected ppv by WWE current standards. Without further ramblings lets get into the hits and misses.

Hit:

Kurt Angle vs. Rey Mysterio:

Now this match had potential to be great… and in my eyes it was just that! Angle proved once again why he is one of the greatest wrestlers in the world where as Rey showed up for the first time since his return he really has still got it! After a very impressive display of slick highflying moves and submissions Kurt Angle won with the ankle lock submission. ****

Miss:

Ric Flair vs. Chris Jericho

This match was destined to be a stinker from the get go. On paper it looked bad and in actuality it was even worse. The only thing that could have made this match a total stink fest is if Jericho lost… Wait he did lose, Thanks WWE for knocking the first ever unified champion back down to the bottom of the ladder... way to go. For the record Flair won with a figure four leg lock. 1/2*

Hit:

Edge vs. Eddie Guerrero

Now I will never hide the fact that I think Edge is the much less talented member of the Edge and Christian tag team. Whilst Edge seems to have been given attempt after attempt to get over as a main eventer, Christian keeps getting help back despite his far superior skills. Anyway pretty boy Edge pulled off an entertaining match with Gurrero that had a fast pace with some good moves. In the end Edge won with the spear. **1/2

Hit:

Christian & Lance Storm (champions) vs. Booker T & Goldust

Another good match that although had the potential to be a lot better remained an entertaining bout with some good moves and just to keep the fans happy a spinarooni to boot. Good to see the Un-Americans get a victory and keep the titles… Bad test had to help them get the win with his big boot. ***

Hit:

Chris Benoit (c) vs. Rob Van Dam

A great match between arguably two of the very best wrestlers in the world today. In my opinion this match should be and could be main event in a years time. Both men are still reasonably young and just keep pulling off awesome matches. This one was a little slow to start but finished up with all the high spots you come to expect from these two. Winner and new champion with a sweet five star frog splash, RVD. ***1/2

Miss:

The Undertaker vs. Test

This match was never going to be great… and guess what it wasn’t! Despite a very cool display from the Undertaker with a sweet tombstone and the holding up of the Flag to the crowd, the rest of this match was slow and crapilicious. *

Hit:

Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels

Ok so it’s certainly not a well kept secret that good old HBK is a bit of a hero to me. The guy couldn’t have a bad match if he tried. But after four years away from the ring and very serious back injury, could he pull off a great match with a guy who hasn’t had a decent match in over a year? YOU’RE DAMN RIGHT!!!! This match didn’t surpass my expectations… it blew them out of the water. I had a friend remark to me as Shawn started the match that "he looked a little stoned" to which I corrected him and said "NO he looks TOTALLY WASTED" But as the match went on Shawn and Triple H got faster and better and Shawn didn’t skip a beat. Anyway 2 blade jobs (which if you look carefully you can notice they shared the blade… ewww) and some awesome high spots later Shawn Michaels won the match when he reversed the pedigree to a pin. AWESOME MATCH. If you haven’t seen it get a hold of it ASAP. *****

Hit:

The Rock (c) vs. Brock Lesnar

Ok so we all knew Brock would win… No surprises there. But did we know that the crowd would be behind him? Did we know they would boo The Rock and chant "Rocky Sucks". I was VERY surprised. Still the match was smooth and gave everyone what they wanted to see, a new champ and some prestige restored to the WWE title. At last the belt means something again… for now. Winner and new champ with the F-5 Brock Lesnar. ***3/4

So overall the event was a big hit in my eyes. Although the main event was Rock vs Brock in my eyes Shawn Michaels return was the real reason for showing up. It was a great card and after this and the return of Kane looks like WWE may be taking steps in the right direction to improving there viewing and getting it back up to where we expect it to be… of course that’s my opinion I could be wrong.
